Adoption Process at the Puerto Vallarta Animal Shelter

Step 1: Meet the animals

Visit in person: You can go to the shelter (with prior appointment) and meet the animals in person. This will allow you to interact with them and see which one best suits your lifestyle and personality.

Explore the online list: We have an updated registry of cats and dogs with photos and descriptions of the animals available for adoption. You can review these lists to see if any of them interest you.

Step 2: Complete the adoption application

Form: You must fill out an adoption application form according to what interests you, cats or dogs. It asks questions about your lifestyle, your home, your experience with previous pets, and your reasons for adopting.

Be honest: It is important to answer the questions on the form honestly and completely. This will help the shelter determine if you are the best candidate for the animal you are interested in.

Step 3: Applicant evaluation

Interview: You may be called for an interview or asked to attend an interview in person. During the interview, you will be asked questions about your application and your expectations as a pet owner.

Reference check: The shelter may check your references (personal or veterinary) to obtain more information about you and how you have cared for pets in the past.

Step 4: Adoption approval

Shelter decision: Once they have reviewed your application and completed the evaluation, the shelter will make a decision on whether to approve your adoption application.

Notification: If your application is approved, you will be notified and given instructions on the next steps.

Step 5: Payment and documentation

Recovery fee: You must pay a recovery fee. This fee is $350 MXN for cats and $500 MXN for dogs.

Documentation: You must submit a copy of your official identification (INE) and proof of address.

Step 6: Delivery of the pet

Contract signing: You must sign an adoption contract in which you agree to care for and protect the animal.

Animal delivery: Once you have completed all the procedures, you can take your new pet home.

Important!

Spaying/Neutering: Most animals are delivered spayed or neutered and vaccinated. If not, you will be given information on how and when to do it.

Follow-up: Occasionally, adopted animals may be followed up to ensure they are being well cared for.
